Hardware Finishes in the Luxury Home: Why This Detail Changes Everything

Hardware is one of the last things clients think about and one of the first things that reads as cheap or expensive in a finished space. The quality and finish of cabinet pulls, faucets, light fixtures, door handles, and switch plates adds up to either a cohesive, considered interior or a room that cannot quite close the loop on what it is trying to be.

I spend real time on hardware selections on every project, and I am always surprised by how much pushback I get initially and how much clients appreciate it once they see the finished room.

01 The Current Finish Landscape

The move away from polished nickel and brushed nickel toward warmer metals has been steady over the last five years and is now firmly established in the luxury residential market. Unlacquered brass, aged brass, satin brass, bronze, and blackened iron are the dominant finishes in high-end Los Angeles homes right now. Each has a different quality and reading in a space.

Unlacquered brass develops a patina over time, which some clients love and others find unpredictable. Satin brass has a softer, more matte quality that reads as refined without being precious. Bronze is darker and works well in spaces with more wood, leather, or rich textiles. Blackened iron or matte black is strong and contemporary, and works particularly well in kitchens with stone or plaster elements where the contrast is intentional.

Mixed metal finishes, using two finish families within the same space, are increasingly common and can be very effective when done with restraint. The rule I follow is to anchor the space with one dominant finish and use the second as an accent. Satin brass fixtures with matte black cabinet hardware, for example, or bronze plumbing with brushed nickel architectural hardware. More than two finishes in one room requires real confidence to not look scattered.

02 Where Quality Shows Most

Plumbing fixtures, particularly faucets and shower controls, are the hardware category where quality shows most immediately. A cheap faucet on a beautiful stone vanity is one of the most common ways a renovation undersells itself. I consistently specify plumbing fixtures from brands that manufacture their own components, which typically means longer life, better operation, and finishes that hold up over years of use.

Cabinet hardware is the detail that most affects the daily experience of a kitchen or bathroom. The weight of a pull, the way a hinge closes, the action of a drawer system: these small experiences accumulate. In a kitchen you open and close fifty times a day, it matters.

03 Going Into 2027

The hardware finish conversation for 2027 is moving toward more individualized choices and away from the uniform application of a single trending finish. Clients with a strong design point of view are asking for custom hardware, bespoke foundry finishes, and architectural hardware that functions as sculpture. For those who want something more restrained, the best choices remain the warm, matte metals that have anchored high-end interiors for the last several years. What is fading is the all-brushed-nickel kitchen, which looks dated quickly and reads as a spec-home choice now regardless of the price point it is applied at.
